DEFCON Warning System – Update 1/1/23

This is the DEFCON Warning System. Alert status for 9 P.M. UTC, Sunday, January 1st, 2023.  Condition code is Green.  DEFCON 5.

There are currently no imminent nuclear threats at this time.

The United States believes that China’s nuclear weapons arsenal will triple in size by 2035.  Meanwhile, Russia and China strategic bombers fly joint patrol in sign of increasing cooperation.  India has successfully test fired an intercontinental nuclear capable ballistic missile a notified range of 5,400 kilometres.

The U.S. Space Force establishes a unit based in Hawaii and is responsible for operations in the Asia-Pacific region.

Russia says that the threat of nuclear war is growing.  Additionally, Russia has also said that it may consider adding a policy of nuclear first strike to its military doctrine.  The DEFCON Warning System believes that Russia already has such a policy, even if not formally codified.  Russian Zircon hypersonic missiles are to enter combat duty by this month, while Russia has announced plans to increase the size of its military by half, aiming for a total force of 1.5 million.  Additionally, Russia is to equip Belarusian warplanes to use weapons with nuclear warheads.

North Korea has tested a new solid-fuel rocket engine, further advancing its nuclear weapons programme.  North Korea sends drones into South Korea.  South Korea was unable to intercept them and has sent drones into North Korea in response.  Due to the rising tension in the area, Japan is to add counterstrike missiles to its arsenal.

United States says there is no progress with Iran nuclear deal and none expected in near future.

The DEFCON Warning System is a private intelligence organization which has monitored and assessed nuclear threats by national entities since 1984.  It is not affiliated with any government agency and does not represent the alert status of any military branch.  The public should make their own evaluations and not rely on the DEFCON Warning System for any strategic planning.  At all times, citizens are urged to learn what steps to take in the event of a nuclear attack.  If this had been an actual attack, the DEFCON Warning System will give radiation readings for areas that are reported to it.  Your readings will vary.  Official news sources will have radiation readings for your area.
