DEFCON Warning System – Update 6/1/23

This is the DEFCON Warning System. Alert status for 9 P.M. UTC, Thursday, June 1st, 2023.  Condition code is Green.  DEFCON 5.

There are currently no imminent nuclear threats at this time.

Taiwan says it is to allow the Coast Guard to make the decision as to whether to engage in combat without requiring further authorization.  Chinese state sponsored hackers break in to critical networks to spy on U.S. military.

Russia has formally withdrawn from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, although in practice it has not been followed since 2007.  Belarus is deploying tactical missiles and troops near the border with Poland.   Russia is to start production of a new version of its RS-24 Yars intercontinental ballistic missile that incorporates much more mobile independent warheads.  Additionally, Russia has signed a deal to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, and Belarus has offered nuclear weapons to any nation willing to join the Union State of Russia and Belarus.

Ukraine has joined NATO‘s cyber defence centre.  NATO has drawn up plans on how to respond to a Russian attack.  Such plans have not been made for decades and reflect growing concern among the block regarding Russian aggression.

The United States has signalled that that it will not block allies from exporting F-16 jets to Ukraine and says that it plans to provide F-16s to Ukraine itself.  Russia’s Medvedev says a pre-emptive strike is needed if Ukraine receives nuclear weapons.  While Medvedev has often made inflammatory threats, we assess that this is likely aligned with Russian policy.

Iran is building a facility which is beyond the reach of bunker busting bombs.  Additionally, Iran has tested a ballistic missile with a 2,000 kilometer range.  The IAEA has closed investigations into traces of man-made uranium at the undeclared Marivan site in Abadeh County in Iran as well as uranium particles enriched to 83.7% at the Fordow facility, citing reasonable explanations by the country.

The United States says it is ready for conflict in outer space.
