DEFCON Warning System – Update 6/1/20

This is the DEFCON Warning System. Alert status for 2 P.M., Monday, June 1st, 2020. Condition code is Green. DEFCON 5.

United States is to withdraw from the Open Skies treaty, citing continuous violations by Russia, violations which Russia denies. Additionally, the United States is contemplating resuming nuclear testing following accusations that Russia and China are conducting low-yield nuclear tests themselves. Meanwhile, Russian submarine activity in the Barents Sea have returned to Cold War levels.

China harassment of U.S. and Japanese ships have increased over the last few months in the South China Sea, while China says that relations with the United States were “on the brink of a new Cold War”. In another flash point, a Chinese General has said that attacking Taiwan was an option to stop its independence move.

The United States is to remove Patriot anti-missile batteries from Saudi Arabia and will also consider a reduction soon in the U.S. Navy presence in the Persian Gulf resulting from an assessment that Iran is no longer the threat it originally posed. However, Iran could see U.S. weakness as it ships fuel to Venezuelan despite sanctions and threats by the United States, although the U.S. was able to stop shipments non-violently by threatening sanctions on the businesses or countries shipping the supplies.

There are continuing reports that North Korea is running money laundering operations with the Chinese to avoid sanctions and fund nuclear program.

The DEFCON Warning System is a private intelligence organization which has monitored and assessed nuclear threats by national entities since 1984.
