DEFCON Warning System – Update 11/28/22

This is the DEFCON Warning System. Alert status for 9 P.M. UTC, Monday, November 28th, 2022.  Condition code is Green.  DEFCON 5.

There are currently no imminent nuclear threats at this time.

While winter descends upon Ukraine, it does not look like that either Ukraine nor Russia is going to slow down their military action in the Ukraine theatre.

Nuclear rhetoric from Russia has significantly decreased.  With the Ukraine advancement slowed, more forces being sent in from Russia, and a digging in by Russia for defence, it is unlikely that Ukraine will made significant advancements for the next few months and that the threat of nuclear attack has receded for the time being.  The public is urged to take this time to prepare, however, as Spring will come and the situation will become more unsteady again.

NATO does not believe that a cease-fire between Ukraine and Russia on Russian terms would be acceptable, concerned that Russia would continue attacks based on the notion that NATO would capitulate again.  Additionally, NATO reiterates its position that it will not establish a no-fly zone in Ukraine so it would not become a party to the conflict.  Meanwhile, battlefield victories has propelled Ukraine to refuse any negotiations with Russia at this time, claiming it would give Russia time to rearm.  The United States believes Russia will resort to chemical weapons before it uses nuclear weapons in the Ukraine war.

Russia and the United States are expected to meet to discuss resuming inspections of atomic weapons sites under the New START treaty.  However, Russia has postponed nuclear disarmament talks with the United States.

Iran claims to have developed a hypersonic ballistic missile.  The International Atomic Energy Agency has criticized Iran’s lack of cooperation with the U.N. nuclear watchdog.  Iran states that it has begun enriching uranium to 60% at its Fordow facility.  This is in addition to its enrichment at other locations.

The United States has threatened a heightened military presence in South Korea if China does not help curtail North Korean provocations.  The United States also warns Israel that defence ties will be hurt if Israel installs certain ministers in their cabinet.  Meanwhile, NATO member Turkey’s top security official has said that his country would strike back against the United States after accusing the U.S. of being behind a deadly terror attack in Turkey.

The DEFCON Warning System is a private intelligence organization which has monitored and assessed nuclear threats by national entities since 1984.  It is not affiliated with any government agency and does not represent the alert status of any military branch.  The public should make their own evaluations and not rely on the DEFCON Warning System for any strategic planning.  At all times, citizens are urged to learn what steps to take in the event of a nuclear attack.  If this had been an actual attack, the DEFCON Warning System will give radiation readings for areas that are reported to it.  Your readings will vary.  Official news sources will have radiation readings for your area.
