DEFCON Warning System – Update 4/24/22

This is the DEFCON Warning System. Alert status for 9 P.M. UTC, Sunday, April 24th, 2022. Condition code is Blue. DEFCON 4.

There are currently no imminent nuclear threats at this time, however there are events occurring in the world theatre which require closer monitoring.

There is growing concern about the health of the Russian president, with some expressing the opinion that an unhealthy or even dying president could feel that he has nothing to lose and will take extreme measures to achieve his goal. The CIA has warned of potential nuclear weapons use in Ukraine given the setbacks Russia has so far, combined with the Russian president’s “mystical belief that his destiny is to restore Russia’s sphere of influence”. Russia, however, has said that it is not considering the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine. Additionally, Russia has warned that Ukraine and the United States could use weapons of mass destruction in Ukraine.

Poland says it is open to hosting nuclear weapons. Russia has called this a provocation. Additionally, Russia warns of nuclear escalation if Finland and Sweden join NATO. Meanwhile, Russia warns of open conflict between Russia and the United States over U.S. arms shipments to Ukraine. NATO plans to augment its forces on its eastern borders in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia says that peace talks with Ukraine are at a dead end. Ukraine says it is unwilling to give up territory in the East to stop the war. It is important to note that Russia is willing to defend its captured territory in Crimea with nuclear weapons.

North Korea says that it will use nuclear weapons if attacked by the South. Likely this threat extends to other aggressors as well. This makes three countries, North Korea, China, and Russia, who have expressed in detail that they will use nuclear weapons in a non-nuclear conflict.

Iran says nuclear talks are going well. The United States says it will not conduct anti-satellite missile tests. The Finland parliament has voted to join NATO.
