Nuclear War Threat Assessment: 4/25/25 – The DEFCON Warning System

This is the DEFCON Warning System. Alert status for 4:30 P.M. UTC, Friday April 25th, 2025. Condition code is Blue. DEFCON 4.

There are currently no imminent nuclear threats at this time, however there are events occuring in the world theatre which require closer monitoring.

An attack by Pakistan-linked militants against India has sparked a significant escalation in tensions between the two countries. India has currently responded by canceling a treaty, moving its military, and preparing to take casualties. Additionally, India has cut off one of Pakistan’s water supplies. Pakistan has warned that the cutting off of water is an act of war and has additionally said that it would respond significantly should India attack.

There is little doubt that India will attack locations thought to be held by the militant group. The concern is the level of vengeance India may seek or how far Pakistan will allow India to seek retribution. At this time, there are significant calls within India’s government for large scale retaliation including support to fully retake the disputed Kashmir region.

We will continue to monitor the situation. At this time, there is no cause for concern, but citizens of the affected areas including India, Pakistan, and China are urged to be more aware of ongoing developments.

NATO says that they are seeing reports that Russia is considering the possibility of deploying nuclear weapons in space while Russia seeks to base long-range strategic bombers in Indonesia.

Russia has approved a strategic cooperation treaty with Iran, but it does not include a mutual defense clause. The United States says it will sign a preliminary agreement with Saudi Arabia to cooperate over the kingdom’s ambitions to develop a civil nuclear industry. Meanwhile, Iran has said that its uranium enrichment programme is not subject to negotiation.

China continues to expand its naval capacity and China is assisting Iranian-backed rebels to target U.S. ships in Red Sea.
