There are currently no imminent nuclear threats at this time.
Currently, hostilities between India and Pakistan have normalized. While there continues to be conflict and military action along the Line of Control, the situation has calmed down sufficiently that the threat of escalated conflict has diminished, and there is no immediate threat of nuclear war between the two countries at this time. The public, however, is cautioned to take steps to keep abreast of the situation, as the Western Media did a poor job of relaying vital information to the public during the crisis. The DEFCON Warning System is concerned that should hostilities again break out, the public will be ill-informed if they rely on major media venues.
North Korea continues to produce plutonium and highly enriched uranium which are used for nuclear weapons.
During the recent summit between North Korea and the United States, no agreement was reached. Additionally, the summit was cut short as North Korea refused to give up nuclear weapons. Additionally, North Korea has begun to restore some of its Dongchang-ri missile launch site and is pursuing a rapid rebuilding of the long-range rocket site at Sohae. South Korea reports that North Korea is running uranium enrichment facilities normally at Yongbyon nuclear research facility. Between South Korea and the United States, new war games by the U.S. and South Korea anger North Korea, which calls the games a “wanton violation” of recent agreements.
Following the U.S., Russia pulls out of INF treaty. China, for its part, has refused to join in any INF treaty. Although China has expressed a “No First Use” policy regarding nuclear weapons, the DEFCON Warning System does not believe that any No First Use policy is valid and that any country will use their nuclear arsenal if it will give a strategic advantage under the right conditions. Of important note regarding Russia, Russia says it will respond to any U.S. deployment of short or intermediate-range nuclear weapons in Europe by targeting not only the countries where they are stationed, but the United States itself as well.
Iran now claims that it has ability to produce a nuclear weapon, but also claims it has no interest in doing so. Additionally, Iran has unveiled a domestically-produced submarine capable of firing cruise missiles and has, for the first time, launched a cruise missile from a submarine.
Europe and the United States are split on their approach to Iran, with the United States moving to a more hardline stance. This wedge is an advantage to Iran as it sees an exploitable fracture as it continues to pursue its nuclear goals. Meanwhile, Britain and the E.U. have no plans to abandon the Iran nuclear deal, continuing trade with Iran as well as establishing routes to evade U.S. sanctions on dealings with Iran. Iran has also announced the construction of two new nuclear plants with the help of Russia.
